The school’s board of trustees voted 5-1 to extend the agreement through 2026, which would provide $500 million in funding for its operations and about 1,200 jobs over five years.
In the meantime, the state has offered to pay the school’s bills until the end and give the university and its employees a 10 per cent cut in the state pension.
The agreement, which was approved by the state legislature, would also include a pledge by the university to invest $100 million in a new $600 million campus, to be developed by the firm the university partnered with in the deal.
The North Carolina School of the Arts, which operates the university’s flagship High School of Arts, has also signed an agreement.
The new agreement would pay for about 1.5 million square feet of renovations at the school, which includes the construction of a new auditorium, a new playground and a new classroom.
It also includes a commitment from the school to increase its graduation rate from its current 12 per cent to 18 per cent.
Students and faculty would also be able to opt out of classes if they choose to and a number of students have already applied to the school.
However, it remains unclear when the schools will reopen.
The Associated Press reported earlier this week that North Carolina’s public schools were still on the verge of closing.
In February, the UNC System announced it would close more than 200 campuses, including the University at Raleigh.
